Buying repair tools: voltage, marks and imports
How to buy soldering and repair tools on AliExpress for a US or Canadian bench: voltage variants, safety marks, store names, returns and import costs.
Short answer
Buy the variant labeled 110 V, 120 V or 110-120 V, check who is really selling it, and read safety marks for what they actually prove. A store called "Official Store" is not proof that the brand runs it. Expect applicable duties and fees on AliExpress orders to the US now that de minimis is suspended, and in Canada, duty and tax relief of only up to CAD 20 on parcels from countries such as China.[1][2]
Voltage and plug come first
US household power is 110-120 V at 60 Hz.[3] Canadian outlets are 120 V too: Manitoba Hydro's wiring guide, for example, lists 120 volts for lights and convenience outlets.[4] One model name can cover several mains versions: Weller publishes separate 120 V and 230 V versions of its WE1010 kit, and the pages for YIHUA's 959D and QUICK's 861DW hot-air stations list 220 V only.[5][6][7] American Hakko goes further: it says most authentic Hakko sellers are based in the US and Canada and sell 120 V products, and that anything else can be a fake.[8]
So the voltage variant you select is the first thing to check, before price or features. A grounded three-prong US plug comes next; the ESD and bench safety overview explains why grounding matters.
What safety marks prove
| Mark | Who stands behind it | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| UL, ETL, CSA and other NRTL marks | A lab recognized by OSHA that certifies products to safety standards[9][10] | OSHA says recognizing a lab is not an endorsement of the products it certifies[11] |
| CE | The manufacturer, declaring that the product meets EU law | Not a safety approval by the EU or any other authority[12] |
| FCC | Authorization for radio-frequency devices, about interference | Not evidence of shock or fire safety[13] |
A logo in listing photos is easy to copy, so check the certifier's own directory; Intertek, for example, runs a Directory of Listed Products for the ETL mark.[14] OSHA also says it does not require manufacturers to have their products certified by a recognized lab, so treat a genuine listing as evidence of safety testing, not as a legal minimum.[11] UL vs ETL vs CE vs FCC explains each mark in more detail.
Store names and genuine parts
- QUICKO links its AliExpress store from its own website, the kind of link that ties a store to a brand.[15]
- A store named "KSGER Official Store" exists, but we found no KSGER-controlled website that confirms it.[16]
- Pine64 says no genuine Pinecils are sold on AliExpress and it has no authorized resellers there.[17]
- Hakko warns that counterfeits circulate online and tells buyers to use authorized distributors.[18][8]
That is why we describe third-party tips as T12-format or C245-compatible, never as genuine Hakko or JBC parts.
Returns and import costs
- Returns. AliExpress's Free Return terms cover only items that carry the Free Return label, with a 15-day window to request a return and items that are unused and in their original packaging.[19]
- United States. Duty-free de minimis treatment has been suspended for imports from all countries since August 29, 2025, and 2026 rules from US Customs and Border Protection made the suspension indefinite for every shipping mode, including mail. Legislation ends the exemption on July 1, 2027.[1][20]
- Canada. For goods from countries outside the CUSMA trade agreement, such as China, duty and tax relief applies only up to CAD 20. The CAD 150 duty and CAD 40 tax levels apply to qualifying courier shipments from the US or Mexico.[2]

Common questions
Is a '110 V' soldering station right for a 120 V outlet?
Yes, if that is its rated input. The US Department of Energy describes US household power as 110-120 V at 60 Hz, so a variant labeled 110 V, 120 V or 110-120 V is the one to choose. Check the rating printed on the unit when it arrives. More in AliExpress soldering station buyer's checklist
Can I use a 220 V soldering station with a plug adapter?
Do not plan on it; buy the 110-120 V variant. Makers that sell in both markets publish separate mains versions, such as Weller's 120 V and 230 V WE1010 kits and JBC's CD-1BQF (120 V) and CD-2BQF (230 V) stations. More in AliExpress soldering station buyer's checklist
Does an FCC or CE mark mean a station is electrically safe?
No. CE is the manufacturer's own declaration for EU law, and FCC authorization concerns radio-frequency interference. For safety testing, look for a recognized lab's mark, such as ETL, that you can find in the lab's directory. More in AliExpress soldering station buyer's checklist
Are Hakko or JBC parts sold on AliExpress genuine?
Do not assume so. American Hakko tells buyers to use authorized distributors and warns that counterfeits can carry its logo. We found no JBC statement about marketplace sellers, so we treat such parts as compatible, not genuine. More in AliExpress soldering station buyer's checklist
Will I pay duty on an AliExpress order to the US?
Applicable duties, taxes and fees are owed whatever the order value. De minimis treatment has been suspended for all countries since August 29, 2025, and 2026 CBP rules extended the suspension to every shipping mode, including mail. More in AliExpress soldering station buyer's checklist
How long do I have to return an AliExpress item?
For items with the Free Return label, AliExpress's terms give 15 calendar days to request a return, and the item must be unused and in its original packaging. For other items, check the return terms shown on the listing before you order. More in AliExpress soldering station buyer's checklist
Is ETL as good as UL?
Both are certification marks from labs on OSHA's list of Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories: UL LLC, and Intertek, which runs ETL. Intertek says its ETL mark shows a product was independently tested and certified to applicable safety standards. More in UL, ETL, CE and FCC marks explained
Does a CE mark mean a product is safe?
No. The European Commission says CE marking is the manufacturer's declaration that a product meets EU requirements, and that it does not mean the EU or any other authority approved it as safe. More in UL, ETL, CE and FCC marks explained
Questions
Does 'Official Store' on AliExpress mean the brand runs it?
Not by itself. The strongest sign is a link from the brand's own website, as QUICKO provides for its store. A store named 'KSGER Official Store' exists, but we found no KSGER-controlled website that confirms it.[15][16]
Is CE marking a safety approval?
No. The European Commission says CE marking is the manufacturer's declaration that a product meets EU requirements and does not mean the EU or any other authority has approved it as safe.[12]
Is a UL or ETL listing required by law for a soldering station?
OSHA says its authority is limited to employers and that it does not require manufacturers or suppliers to have products certified by a recognized lab. A genuine listing is evidence of safety testing, not a legal minimum.[11]
Do I pay import duty on AliExpress orders to the US?
Applicable duties, taxes and fees now apply whatever the order value. Duty-free de minimis treatment has been suspended for all countries since August 29, 2025, and 2026 CBP rules extended the suspension to every shipping mode, including mail.[1][20]
What is the Canadian duty-free limit for AliExpress parcels?
For goods from countries outside CUSMA, such as China, the CBSA says duty and tax relief applies only up to CAD 20. The higher CAD 150 duty and CAD 40 tax levels are for qualifying courier shipments from the US or Mexico.[2]
Can I return a tool bought on AliExpress?
AliExpress's Free Return terms apply only to items with the Free Return label: you must request the return within 15 calendar days, and the item must be unused and in its original packaging. Check the label on the listing before you order.[19]
